About the Blackmouth Cur Breed

These are the standards of the Blackmouth Cur:  a fast, hard hunter that finds game using its eyes, ears and nose. Silent trailers are preferred; they will open on a hot track.  Never open like a hound. A loud, deep chop on bay or tree, ringing cry or slight yodel allowed. Never full-blown bawl mouthed. The Blackmouth Cur combines tenacity and courage with a strong desire to work. They are very loyal and are protective of their owner and family. All shades of red, yellow and fawn; black; brown; buckskin; or brindle; with or without black muzzle or mask. Lip pigment and the inside of the mouth, excluding the tongue, are darkly pigmented (thus the name “Blackmouth Cur”).  There are occasional natural bobtails among Blackmouth Cur.  For more information on the standard, you can research breed registries or go to your local library.

This is a bit of the history of a Blackmouth Cur: Originally raised as a pioneer dog that had to earn its keep, they have been bred for multipurpose use such as:  protecting and herding wild stock, protecting the home, companion in the woods, baying and protecting against wild boar, cougar, and bear, and small-game hunting. They have been found to be loyal family pets whose primary urge is to please the master.
